Borderlands
Gearbox's Borderlands fused the loot-hoarding compulsion of Diablo with first-person gunplay and a cel-shaded comic-book look, and that gamble defined a subgenre. The trick from the first game onward was attitude: trillions of randomized guns, a junkyard planet called Pandora, and a writing voice that treats nihilism as a punchline. Borderlands 2 sharpened that into one of the best villains in shooters, and the series has kept expanding through Borderlands 3, the prequel, and Borderlands 4.
The spread beyond the mainline shooters is where it gets interesting. Telltale's Tales from the Borderlands proved the universe could carry a character-driven adventure game, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands spun a fan-favorite side character into a fantasy-flavored standalone, and the 2024 live-action film tried (to mixed reception) to put Pandora on the big screen. The DLC campaigns remain some of the most generous in the business.
The Borderlands franchise spans 20 games, 1 films in the CrossBinge catalog.
