The Tonight Show is the longest-running entertainment franchise in American late-night television, and the lineup here traces its host succession across more than half a century. It runs from Jack Paar's conversational 1957 version through Johnny Carson's three-decade reign, the era that turned the desk-and-couch format into a national institution, into Jay Leno, the brief Conan O'Brien handover, and Jimmy Fallon's move of the show back to New York.
Each host reshaped the program around his own temperament: Paar's emotional spontaneity, Carson's unflappable cool, Leno's broad monologue, Fallon's game-and-sketch energy. It is a television-only property, but one whose real subject is the changing taste of the country watching before bed.
The throughline is the chair itself, a single seat passed between very different comedians, each measured against the giant who held it longest.
The The Tonight Show franchise spans 5 series in the CrossBinge catalog.
