Paper Towns is a 2008 fiction book written by John Green.
A month before graduation, Quentin Jacobsen has his life mapped out and mildly boring, right down to the girl next door he has watched from a distance for years. Then Margo Roth Spiegelman climbs through his window one midnight, drafts him into a campaign of small revenges across Orlando, and vanishes by morning. Quentin reads her disappearance as a puzzle addressed to him, and with his friends Ben, Radar, and Lacey he chases a trail of clues out of Florida's subdivisions. John Green's 2008 novel sits with the gap between the person we imagine and the one who actually exists.

The 2015 film adaptation carries the road-trip half well, with Nat Wolff as Quentin. For the same ache of chasing someone who may only exist in your head, the game Life Is Strange follows a teen unraveling a friend's disappearance in a small town, coming-of-age wrapped in mystery. The Perks of Being a Wallflower fits the tender high-school searching too.
Road trips that turn into a search for one person
Quentin follows Margo's trail out of Orlando with Ben, Radar and Lacey packed into a minivan, treating a missing girl as a puzzle written for him. These stories run on the same engine: someone leaves, someone else drives after them, and the route becomes the plot. Expect long highway stretches, bad maps, and friends arguing in the back seat.
YA that argues with the manic pixie dream girl
Margo climbs through Quentin's window at midnight with a list of small revenges, and he spends the rest of Paper Towns building a whole person out of that one night. John Green wrote the novel as an argument with his own earlier books. These titles hand the idealized girl a voice and give the watching narrator harder work than watching.

Jake Schreier filmed Paper Towns in 2015 with Nat Wolff as Quentin and Cara Delevingne as Margo, keeping the road trip and trimming the book's detours through Walt Whitman. The novel gives you Quentin's running argument with himself, which no camera can shoot. These pairs reward the same order: page first, screen second, then a fight about the cuts.
