Thief Gold (1999)
Thief Gold is a 1999 simulator video game made by Looking Glass Studios.
Shadows are your weapon, sound is your map. Thief Gold casts you as Garrett, a master thief working for coin in a dark fantasy city of gaslit streets, haunted crypts, and heavily guarded manors. Every surface has an acoustic signature, from the soft scuff of carpet to the ring of stone, and every shadow can either hide you or betray you. The Thief series invented the mechanical language that stealth games have spoken since: the light gem, the surface soundscape, the sense that guards are genuinely dangerous rather than puzzles to be solved by combat.

A few thoughts on Thief Gold
Garrett's world of city guilds, supernatural menace, and moral ambiguity in the dark shares DNA with Assassin's Creed II, which brought the same rooftop-infiltration instincts into Renaissance Italy with far more production.
Darkness as a Tool
Light and shadow are load-bearing mechanics, not atmosphere. You read every lamp, torch, and moonbeam because stepping into the wrong patch of light ends the mission.
