The original Law and Order is Wolf's tightest formal achievement: lean, unsentimental, almost classical in its structure. But Special Victims Unit, now past its 25th season, is where the procedural format got genuinely complicated. Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson became an unlikely long-haul protagonist, aging in real time through the cases, carrying accumulated trauma the format was never designed to hold. It is messier than the mothership. It is also, across its best seasons, the more emotionally honest show.

Law and Order: Criminal Intent gave Vincent D'Onofrio the most unusual detective Wolf ever put on screen: Robert Goren, a savant whose methods bordered on psychological manipulation, closer to Columbo than to any standard interrogator. The show ran ten seasons and was largely buried by the mothership's reputation. The Goren episodes from the first five seasons are among the most formally inventive work in the entire Wolf catalog.
