Set in a scorched post-nuclear wasteland, Fist of the North Star follows Kenshiro, heir to the assassination art Hokuto Shinken, whose pressure-point strikes make brutes explode from the inside out. The 1984 series codified a whole register of anime machismo: stoic warrior, doomed rivals, villages crushed under tyrants. Its tragedy runs deeper than the violence suggests, built on the rivalry between Kenshiro and Raoh and the women caught between them.
