Ghostbusters has spent forty years trying to recapture the lightning of one perfect film. The 1984 original, a deadpan blend of horror, special effects and pure comic timing, is the gravity well everything here orbits. This collection shows how many directions the brand has tried to grow.

The animated series did the heavy lifting for a generation: The Real Ghostbusters, its Slimer! spinoff, and the darker Extreme Ghostbusters kept the proton packs firing through Saturday mornings. The games run from the well-regarded 2009 Video Game, effectively a third film with the original cast voicing it, to a LEGO Dimensions crossover. And the later movies argue over the legacy directly, from the 2016 reboot to the nostalgia-driven Afterlife and Frozen Empire. The franchise's problem is also its charm: nobody, including the people making it, can stop chasing 1984.
