LittleBigPlanet was Media Molecule's bet that players would rather build than just play. Behind its handmade aesthetic of fabric, cardboard and zippers sat a full physics-based creation toolkit, and its real legacy is the community that used it, sharing millions of homemade levels under the series' play, create and share ethos.

Sackboy, the burlap mascot, anchors the whole line. The numbered platformers kept expanding the creation tools, while spin-offs pushed him into kart racing, an endless runner and the polished solo platformer Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

The appeal is tactile warmth and generosity. Few franchises hand the design keys to their audience so completely, which is why LittleBigPlanet is remembered as much for what fans made as for what the studio shipped. Sackboy also turns up in PlayStation's crossover brawler.
