Metal Gear

Metal Gear is Hideo Kojima's decades-long argument that a video game can be cinema, satire, and stealth playground all at once. It effectively invented the modern stealth genre on the MSX2, then exploded into cultural significance with 1998's Metal Gear Solid, whose fourth-wall-breaking boss fights and dense Cold War paranoia still feel ahead of their time.

The numbered Solid saga told a sprawling, deliberately convoluted story about cloning, nuclear deterrence, and information control, jumping across decades so that Snake Eater's prequel reframed everything that came before. Spin-offs pushed the formula sideways: the card-battling Acid, the hack-and-slash Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, the survival experiment of Metal Gear Survive. Konami even released parts of the story as digital graphic novels. It is a series best understood as one auteur's running essay, told mostly through the controller.

The Metal Gear franchise spans 25 games, 3 films in the CrossBinge catalog.
