Ninja Gaiden

Ninja Gaiden has lived two lives. The 1988 NES original was notorious for punishing difficulty and, for its era, surprisingly cinematic cutscenes. Then Team Ninja's 2004 reboot reinvented the name as the definitive hardcore 3D action game, a test of reflexes and pattern-reading whose combat depth (and brutal boss fights) set a standard other character-action games still measure themselves against.

The modern run, threaded through the Black and Sigma re-releases, is the franchise's beating heart and the reason Ryu Hayabusa endures as gaming's most demanding ninja. The 2025 slate, including Ninja Gaiden 4 and the 2D Ragebound, marks a real revival after years of quiet. This is a series that has always asked more of players than most, and rewarded the ones who rose to it.
