Rurouni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin reimagines Japan's Meiji era through Himura Kenshin, a former assassin who carries a reverse-blade sword and a vow never to kill again. The premise gives the swordplay genuine moral weight: every duel tests whether a man who once slaughtered for the new government can atone without taking another life. The 1996 anime made Kenshin's gentle exterior and lethal past into one of the medium's most quietly tragic figures.

The live-action films are the standout here, staging some of the most kinetic sword choreography ever committed to screen. The two-part finale, The Final and The Beginning, doubles back to dramatize the scar and the love that defined Kenshin's youth. Anime retellings of the Kyoto arc and a Jump Force appearance round out a property that keeps interrogating the cost of violence rather than celebrating it.

The Rurouni Kenshin franchise spans 2 series, 7 films in the CrossBinge catalog.
