The immortal character is our stand-in for the question we cannot answer, whether it is death that gives life its meaning, and whether we would really want the alternative if we ever got it.

The curse is the company you outlive

The wisest immortality stories know the danger is not boredom but grief. The Man from Earth and The Age of Adaline understand that to live forever is to bury everyone, again and again, and that the real weight of endless years is measured in goodbyes. The gift and the curse are the same thing.

Games found a sly way in through the respawn: the medium where you already cannot truly die. From the looping nightmares of Returnal to the eternal recurrence of Hades, immortality became a mechanic that is also a theme.

And it is ancient on the page, reaching all the way back to Gilgamesh's doomed quest to escape death, the very first story humans wrote down.
