Mass Effect 2 (2010)
Mass Effect 2 is a 2010 shooter video game made by BioWare and BioWare Edmonton.
Commander Shepard is dead. Or was. Rebuilt by the shadowy Cerberus organization and handed a nearly impossible mission, Shepard must assemble a team of specialists across the galaxy to strike at the Collectors before they can erase humanity. Mass Effect 2 narrows its focus from epic sweep to intimate loyalty: each squad member carries a personal mission, and earning their trust is the point. BioWare's writing here is sharp and character-specific, the third-person shooter mechanics are tight, and the sense of a squad worth fighting for is genuine.

A few thoughts on Mass Effect 2
The animated film Mass Effect: Paragon Lost fills in Alliance combat from the same era. If the squad-loyalty structure appeals, Star Trek - Destiny - Gods of Night delivers that same sense of desperate coalition-building in novel form.
The squad loyalty structure
Mass Effect 2 is built around earning trust rather than completing objectives. Each companion has a personal mission that unlocks only when Shepard has proven themselves. These works share that focus on a team whose members carry their own weight.
