For Fans of Ryan Gosling

Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive arrived in 2011 and quietly changed what genre filmmaking was allowed to feel like. Gosling's Driver speaks in short bursts and lets the silences carry the weight, and the film trusts that choice completely. The synthwave score, the slow-burn editing, the sudden eruption of violence: each element lands harder because everything else is so restrained. It is not a stunt. It is a precision instrument.

Denis Villeneuve and Gosling made a sequel that was more patient and more philosophically serious than its predecessor, and audiences did not show up. That is a shame, because K's arc, exploring questions of memory and identity in a beautifully cold future, is one of the most melancholy performances in recent science fiction. The film rewards repeated viewing in a way that few big-budget productions attempt.

Shane Black's 1970s LA buddy comedy gave Gosling room to be genuinely funny, and the film remains underseen relative to its quality. His Jackson Healy is a physically incompetent, emotionally confused mess, and Gosling commits to every pratfall without winking at the audience. The pairing with Russell Crowe also reveals how much Gosling's timing improves when he has a real counterpart to play against.

The film's reputation as a feel-good musical does it a disservice. La La Land is about what ambition takes from people, and the final sequence earns its bittersweet weight precisely because Gosling and Emma Stone spend the previous two hours making you believe in the version of their lives that did not happen. Damien Chazelle uses the musical form to say something genuinely sad about the price of a dream.
