Shogun 2 remains the high watermark

More than a decade after release, Shogun 2: Total War is still the one veterans point to first. The campaign map is tightly constrained, which forces political pressure at every turn. The art direction is cohesive and beautiful. The multiplayer was ahead of its time. Creative Assembly never quite recaptured that focus in a historical setting, and the fantasy entries, for all their spectacle, are a different thing. If you have one Total War to play, this is it.

Three Kingdoms proved the series could do drama, not just warfare

Total War: Three Kingdoms arrived in 2019 with a relationship system and character-driven politics that felt borrowed from Crusader Kings rather than from the series' own heritage. It worked. The historical soap opera of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms period, where alliances collapse overnight and sworn brothers betray each other for territory, turned out to be a natural fit for the formula. It expanded what the series could be beyond pure military simulation.

The Warhammer trilogy is Total War's most ambitious project

Licensing the Warhammer Fantasy Battles universe gave Creative Assembly permission to build enormous unit rosters and mechanical asymmetry it had never attempted before. Three games over six years, a combined campaign that merges all factions onto one map, and hundreds of hours of content. Whether the fantasy pivot diluted the historical identity or expanded the audience is a genuine debate, but the craft on display is hard to argue with.

Historical strategy games reward patience in a way most modern games don't

The campaign turn in a Total War game asks you to think four moves ahead: where will the enemy probe, which province needs a garrison, which trade partner is about to turn hostile.
