For Fans of Nicolas Cage

Everything wild and unhinged that Cage does later has its root in his 1995 Oscar-winning work. Ben Sanderson is not a performance of a drunk man. He is a man who has decided to die and committed to that decision with a terrible calm. Cage does not signal the degradation from the outside. He inhabits it so completely that the film never feels like misery tourism. Every excess that follows in his career draws credibility from the fact that he proved, here, that the commitment is real.

By 2021 the internet had spent a decade treating Cage as a punchline, a GIF factory, a riffable icon. Then Pig arrived and ended the joke. The film uses the shape of a revenge thriller and then refuses every revenge-thriller beat, leaving space instead for grief, craft, and the question of what it costs a person to live authentically. Cage's performance is barely spoken. It is one of the quietest things he has ever done, and that restraint lands harder than any of the shouting.

Critics who draw a line between Serious Cage and Unhinged Cage are describing the same person twice. Panos Cosmatos gave him a grief story wrapped in a neon-horror mythology, and Cage treated every register, the quiet early scenes of domestic tenderness and the blood-drenched chainsaw standoff, with identical seriousness. The film is not an exercise in camp. It is a sincere howl of mourning dressed in genre clothes, and it works because the actor never once winks at the audience.

Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze gave Cage two roles to play: a real screenwriter in crisis and an imaginary twin who has no crisis at all. The film is about the terror of adaptation, of taking something alive and making it a product, and Cage navigates both characters without letting either become a cartoon. He plays desperation and confidence in alternation, across scenes that are also about him playing those states. Few films are this structurally strange and this emotionally lucid at the same time.
