For Fans of Arcane

Stunning animation, warring cities, and siblings torn apart by ideology: what to watch, read, and play next.

Arcane (Netflix, 2021) is the animated series set in the League of Legends universe, following sisters Vi and Jinx as Piltover's gleaming prosperity and Zaun's underground desperation drag them to opposite sides of a revolution. Its reputation rests on three things: animation by Fortiche Productions that treats every frame as a painting; character writing that refuses easy villains; and a sibling tragedy so well-executed that it drew in millions of viewers who had never touched the game. The through-line a fan loves is emotional stakes wrapped in spectacular world-building, where ideology, class, and loyalty collide. Season 2 arrived in November 2024, completing the story of Vi, Jinx, Jayce, and Viktor in full.

The Sibling Tragedy Is the Story

Arcane could have coasted on League of Legends brand recognition. Instead, Fortiche and the showrunners built everything around Vi and Jinx: the choices that divide them, the love that survives those choices, and the way institutions weaponize both. The world-building is extraordinary, but it exists to put pressure on that relationship. That is why viewers with no connection to the game found the finale devastating.

Piltover vs Zaun Is a Class Argument

The upper city/undercity divide is not set dressing. Piltover hoards the benefits of hextech; Zaun breathes the runoff. Silco and Jayce both understand this, they just choose different methods. Arcane joins a long tradition of fantasy that uses vertical geography (who lives above, who lives below) to ask real questions about who bears the cost of progress.

Fortiche Proved Animation Is Not a Children's Medium

Every frame of Arcane looks like a pre-production painting that accidentally became the final product. Fortiche's hybrid technique layers hand-painted textures over 3D animation in a way that had not been seen at series scale before. It shifted the conversation about what streaming animation could look like, and it arrived at the same moment Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was doing the same thing for theatrical features.
