The samurai film is one of cinema's great inventions, and almost everything that came after, from the spaghetti western to the modern action movie, owes it a debt. Kurosawa built the grammar, but the form has long outgrown one country and one era, carrying bushido onto television, into novels and onto the controller without losing the weight of the blade.

The great samurai stories are rarely triumphant. Harakiri and The Twilight Samurai understand that the code is often a cage, a beautiful set of rules that mostly tells a good man how to lose everything with dignity. The duel is thrilling, but the tragedy is what the genre is actually about.

Games found a near-perfect fit here: the patience, the single decisive strike, the meditative space between blows. Whether you are a ghost haunting an invaded island or a shinobi dying again and again, the katana suits a controller.
