There is a version of Kratos that most people remember first: ash-white skin, twin blades on chains, a scream aimed at the heavens as another god comes apart in his hands. That was the Kratos who arrived in 2005 and spent the next decade tearing through Greek myth, and he made Santa Monica Studio one of PlayStation's crown jewels. Then, in 2018, the same studio did something almost no long-running franchise dares. It kept the name, kept the man, and reinvented nearly everything else.
This is the map of that journey: the savage Greek saga that built the legend, the Norse reinvention that deepened it, and the studio that pulled off both.
The Greek saga
Kratos against Olympus, blades first
The gamble that redefined the studio
By the end of the Greek saga, Kratos had killed almost everything worth killing. The obvious move was more of the same on more powerful hardware. Instead, director Cory Barlog took the 2018 God of War somewhere colder and quieter: the world of Norse myth, an older and wearier Kratos, and a young son named Atreus walking beside him. The blades were gone, replaced by the Leviathan Axe. The god who once bellowed at the sky now spent the game trying, and failing, to be a father. It was a reinvention that could have destroyed the series. It became the studio's masterpiece.

Frequently asked
What is Santa Monica Studio best known for?
The God of War series. Santa Monica Studio is Sony's first-party developer behind both the original Greek saga starring Kratos and the acclaimed 2018 Norse reinvention and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök.
Who created God of War?
The original 2005 God of War was led by David Jaffe at Santa Monica Studio. The 2018 reinvention, which moved the series into Norse mythology, was directed by Cory Barlog, who had worked on the earlier Greek games.
What changed in the 2018 God of War?
Almost everything except Kratos himself. The 2018 game moved from Greek to Norse myth, introduced his son Atreus, swapped the chained blades for the Leviathan Axe, shifted to an over-the-shoulder camera, and told a slower, more personal father-and-son story presented in a single unbroken shot with no camera cuts.
In what order should I play the God of War games?
For the Greek saga, the release order is God of War (2005), Chains of Olympus, God of War II, God of War III, and Ascension. The Norse story then begins fresh with God of War (2018) and continues in God of War Ragnarök (2022), which work well as a standalone entry point.
