Obsidian Entertainment: The RPG-Sequel Masters and Narrative Torchbearers

Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity and Pentiment. A guide to Obsidian Entertainment, the studio that made a name finishing other people's role-playing games better than the originals, then built worlds of its own where the writing was always the point.

When Interplay shuttered Black Isle Studios in 2003, the people who had built Fallout and Planescape: Torment did not scatter. They regrouped as Obsidian Entertainment and spent the next two decades doing something the industry rarely trusts anyone to do: taking a beloved role-playing game and writing a sequel that outclassed it. Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas, Neverwinter Nights 2. And when they finally built worlds of their own, from Pillars of Eternity to the strange, beautiful Pentiment, they proved the writing was never a bonus. It was the whole game.

This is the Obsidian story: the sequels they were trusted with, the worlds they invented, and the modern studio Microsoft bought to keep the role-playing game honest.

One from each era of Obsidian

The worlds they built themselves

For years Obsidian was the studio you hired to finish someone else's franchise, and it wore on them. So in 2012 they took Pillars of Eternity to Kickstarter, raised nearly four million dollars from players hungry for the old isometric, party-based role-playing game, and proved they could carry a whole world alone. Josh Sawyer, who had directed New Vegas, built a dense and literate fantasy with real moral weight. Tyranny followed with a wicked premise: you play an agent of the empire in a world where evil has already won. And Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire pushed the same engine out across a gorgeous pirate archipelago. Chris Avellone's fingerprints are on much of the studio's early writing before he moved on. These were not work for hire. This was Obsidian, at last, saying it out loud: these are ours.

Frequently asked

What is Obsidian Entertainment known for?

Writing-first role-playing games. Obsidian was founded in 2003 by veterans of Black Isle Studios, the team behind the original Fallout, and made its name on sequels like Knights of the Old Republic II and Fallout: New Vegas before building its own worlds in Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny and Pentiment. It is now part of Xbox Game Studios.

Did Obsidian make Fallout: New Vegas?

Yes. Fallout: New Vegas was developed by Obsidian and published by Bethesda in 2010, built on the Fallout 3 engine. Many of the developers had worked on the original Fallout games at Black Isle, which is part of why New Vegas leans so heavily on branching factions, choice and consequence.

Is Obsidian owned by Microsoft?

Yes. Microsoft acquired Obsidian in 2018, and the studio is now part of Xbox Game Studios. It has kept making role-playing games since, including The Outer Worlds, the survival game Grounded, and the illuminated-manuscript narrative game Pentiment.

Which Obsidian game should I start with?

It depends on your taste. For an open, choice-driven world, start with Fallout: New Vegas. For the classic party-based isometric CRPG, start with Pillars of Eternity. And if you want something completely different, Pentiment is a short, beautiful narrative game unlike anything else the studio has made.
